1 /5 Joshua Melanson: They put you through an initial intake process which is positive. I wanted a quick end to my divorce and was happy to compromise to make it happen. Our goals seemed to align.
Unfortunately, this firm provided poor council during the first phone call with the attorney. Luckily this did not lead to a financial move that would have put me in violation of a court order. Later the attorney wanted me to provide documentary evidence he had previously advised against in an apparent 180. Such documentation was previously claimed to put me in legal liability. What can I believe?
Very disappointing.
Divorce is tough enough. I hired an attorney because I am no legal expert, and I wanted a quick, mediated end to my marriage. Instead, I get bad and changing advice. Plenty of good reviews of these guys. Hope Im an outlier.
**update** New attorney seems solid. 1 month in now, and they have blown through $7500. Received a non-itemized invoice and request for additional funds. I have many thoughts on this, none of them particularly positive.
**update 4/10/25** Started to receive itemized invoices. Lawyer is taking time off on various dates and I was billed for the "Drafting: Draft notice of unavailability of attorney." $35 and the subsequent "Filing: File notice of unavailability of attorney." $35 again and "Review: Review and sign Notice of Unavailability" $47.50. So it appears if your attorney hired here wants to take a few days off its not enough that you already pay him for his work but you must also pay him to notify the courts of his absence. Seems like a cost of doing business to me, and it is… for me to do business with them. I mean it was only $117.50 right?
***update 8/21/25*** The situation never much changed. In May the other party assaulted me and was taken to jail. The next week a revenge ex-parte action was taken against me. The lawyer appeared, as did I, in court. He said nothing. Judge sided for the other side and I lost access to my business. Total in... over $20k. Had to switch firms. So glad I did. Spoken to the new attorney every week. Mediation scheduled. Cost me less than 5k with the mediator cost added in. New lawyer couldnt believe what these guys were charging. Yes, its too high, but whats more of a problem is the absolute failure to get anything for the money. Incredible.
