5 /5 Scott Best: A Special Evening at Anthony’s HomePort. Des Moines
My dad treated Marianne and me to dinner at Anthony’s HomePort in Des Moines using a gift card he had received, and what a wonderful way it was to spend a Friday evening. We went at 4:00 PM the day after Christmas and were surprised to find it already fairly busy, and absolutely packed by the time we left.
From the start, our server was excellent. We were quickly greeted, had our drinks, and were brought warm sourdough bread, which was a great way to settle in. We started with a warm, creamy appetizer served with toasted, buttered bites for dipping. It was rich, comforting, and absolutely delicious.
For our meals, my dad ordered the sirloin steak cooked medium rare and served with broccoli and baby potatoes. It was prepared perfectly. Marianne ordered the same steak but requested it well done. It initially came out rare, but once we mentioned it, the kitchen quickly corrected it and returned it medium well and it was delicious, just a small hiccup that was handled promptly and professionally.
I ordered the seafood fettuccine, and wow, it was everything I hoped for and more. The noodles were perfectly cooked in a rich, garlic sauce loaded with prawns, shrimp, clams, mussels, scallops and vegetables. Every bite was outstanding and easily one of the best pastas I’ve had.
Marianne enjoyed the Anthonys Burnt Cream dessert, which did not disappoint, a perfect way to end the meal.
Beyond the food, what made the evening truly special was sharing it with my dad. We lost my mom earlier this year, and she always loved coming to Anthony’s. Sitting there together brought back wonderful memories and meaningful conversations about her. It was a comforting, heartfelt night in a place that has always felt special to our family.
Excellent food, great service, and a warm atmosphere, Anthony’s HomePort continues to be a place we’ll return to again and again.
