Reach Church - Kirkland
TGIF: The church brings in very good speakers and I get a lot out of the sermons. However, although as a crowd people are friendly and seem welcoming, once I get into smaller groups, that feeling is quickly lost. The large majority gives off the impression they’ve been extremely sheltered or homeschooled in a strictly Christian upbringing. I mean this in a sense that they don’t seem to have a clue as to how to integrate people who come from non-religious, liberal, or just non-conservative backgrounds, that now yearn to follow a Christian lifestyle. Whether it is because they have not been taught how to manage their emotions and thoughts around this or have not tried the “bold” thing to shepherd and communicate those who think differently and come from a non-conservative background, they suddenly get stiff and shifty. I don’t wish to blame the individual for feeling uncomfortable but this has been a strong and consistent experience for me as I’ve tried to get more connected with the church. The discomfort and disregard is so palpable, I remember feeling red in the face several times in small groups. I am self-aware enough to admit that I did not say anything offensive or even at all, just that there was no “space” to discuss anything other than what everyone agreed was “correct”. It is pretty surprising to see this behavior or culture so concentrated here within the largely liberal PNW region, where one can find a lot of diversity in a single church ofttimes. (I’m not looking for a “liberal” crowd, just reinstating that this is a rare sight around here). For this reason, I feel sad about it, thus only attend for specific speakers or events and have decided to call a different church my home.
